More than 45 people from across the Hudson Valley enjoyed some great tennis while supporting an important children’s charity last month, as Rally for the Cause held its first event of the year at Sportsplex (New Windsor, NY).
The event, which was held Feb. 17, raised more than $3,000 for the March of Dimes, and featured a round robin doubles tournament, tennis drills and a buffet.
"The event was amazing," said Nicole Manglass, a volunteer organizer of the event. "Players of all ages and abilities got a chance to play tennis and help children in need."
Sportsplex donated the use of its courts and teaching pros, and each of the participants received gift towels courtesy of USTA Eastern’s Southern Region.
The Southern Region became involved with Rally for the Cause three years ago, as it was looking for ways to create meaningful and creative play opportunities for the region’s adult members.
"Rally for the Cause provided a great format for our members to enjoy tennis competition while raising both awareness and support for organizations who work to improve the quality of life in our Region," said Southern Region President Fran Osei.
In the first year, Rally for the Cause held two events: one to benefit a local diabetes fund and another to benefit breast cancer research. Last year, the group added an event in Rockland County with the proceeds going to the Wounded Warriors.
Last month’s event at Sportsplex was the first of 2013.
"It was a wonderful event for families," said Mark Savage, Tennis Director at Sportsplex. "And everyone walked away a winner."
