Yonkers Tennis Center Demonstrates 10 and Under Tennis at MSG

November 12, 2012 09:57 AM
Madison Square Garden was filled with excitement on Monday, November 5, as tennis legends Andre Agassi, John McEnroe, Patrick Rafter and Pete Sampras competed in the NASDAQ Indexes Cup, part of the PowerShares Series.
Yonkers Tennis Center was asked to showcase their highly successful 10 and Under Tennis program on the big night. Directly before Rafter and Sampras competed in the first set, 15 Yonkers Tennis Center players and their coaches put on a 45-minute on-court demonstration, all while fans poured into the arena and cheered them on.
The purpose of the demonstration was to raise awareness about 10 and Under Tennis and show the results of what this method of teaching can do. Yonkers Tennis Center was recently featured in a USTA Eastern video about the benefits to a facility of running 10 and Under Tennis programming.
The night, which ended with Rafter winning the NASDAQ Indexes Cup, was a huge success, and the Yonkers Tennis Center kids were ecstatic to have been a part of it.
“The coolest thing is that I got to play on the court at Madison Square Garden and then I got to watch Agassi, McEnroe, Rafter and Sampras play on that same court!” said 10-year-old Lauren Alexander, an excited participant and Yonkers Tennis Center player. “I also loved carrying Agassi’s bag. He shook my hand and autographed two orange balls for me.”
Also in attendance at the event were the winners of the USTA Eastern Tennis Family essay contest and members of the JAMF Drop Shots, who won the USTA Jr. Team Tennis National Championship in the 18U Intermediate division last month.
